India records fresh 625 Covid-19 cases; no death, The Hindu

The Hindu reports that India saw a single-day rise of 625 fresh Covid-19 cases on Monday. This figure is the lowest since last reported on April 9, 2020. As new cases have been registered, zero deaths have been reported in a span of 24 hours which is the first since March 2020, says Union Health Ministry. The report also shares an insight into the country’s infection tally, which has climbed to 4,46,62,142, while the active cases have declined to 14,021. Read the full report on The Hindu.

 

Arab News special coverage on COP27 talks about Saudi Arabia contributing to Middle East green initiative

 

Saudi Arabia will contribute $2.5 billion to the Middle East Green Initiative over the next 10 years and host its headquarters in the Kingdom, reports Arab News. The report also adds that the Kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund along with, the Public Investment Fund will aim for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, as said by the Crown Prince Sharm El-Sheikh. According to the report, this initiative was launched by last year, that aimed to reduce carbon emissions from regional hydrocarbon production by more than 60 percent. The Print on India’s imports from up by 43 pc

The Print reports that about $89 Billion worth of Chinese merchandise was imported to India within the first nine months of 2022. With this India’s imports from China are set to cross $100 Billion this year. As per the report, the government’s trade statics reveals that while there has been a gradual fall in overall imports of consumer goods from China, most of the rise in imports is due to the input of capital/industrial goods. As of last year, India’s import from China was about $62.2 Billion, which means that for this year India has reported a 43 percent rise in Chinese imports. Read the full report on The Print.

 

CNN's live updates from US midterm elections

The candidates contesting the US midterm elections have made their closing arguments to voters, while President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump also participated in rallies held by their respective candidates, reports CNN. The report adds that more than 41 million pre-election ballots have been cast in 47 states. The midterm elections will decide the control of both chambers of Congress on the line along with all 435 House seats and 35 of the Senate seats up for grabs. Read the full report on CNN.  

 

The Wire: In Iran’s universities, protests continue despite clampdown

 

Videos of male and female students on the Iranian campuses eating together in gender-segregated dining halls have been circulating across social media platforms. The videos showcase an act of protest and solidarity with the anti-government demonstrations that have been going on for months in Iran, reports The Wire. Eating in front of closed cafeterias is considered an act of resistance, says the report. The students have torn down the walls of the dining halls which would divide men and women.
