Kerala Assembly passes unanimous resolution against SIR: Hindustan Times

Kerala Assembly on Monday unanimously passed a resolution against the Election Commission of India (ECI)'s move to carry out the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voters' list in the state and urged the poll body to conduct the revision of voters' list in a transparent manner, Hindustan Times reports. The Congress-led UDF opposition, which had already expressed their strong reservations against the SIR, backed the resolution in the House moved by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the report says. In the resolution, the CM conveyed the concerns of the House about the "hasty move" by the ECI to implement the SIR and suspected "ill-motive" behind their action. Read the full report here.

 

Apex Body, Leh pulls out of talks with Centre on Oct 6, Indian Express

 

The Apex Body, Leh (ABL) has pulled out of talks with the Union Home Ministry, scheduled for October 6, citing the arrest of its member and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act, levelling of “anti-national” tag at the protests for statehood, and the killing of youths in police firing on September 24. Indian Express reports that in a decision Monday, the ABL said it won’t participate in the discussions till the action against its members was not rescinded. The association, which has been spearheading Leh’s demand for protections under the Sixth Schedule or statehood, has also pulled out of the informal discussions planned with the Centre for September 30. Death toll rises to four after Michigan church shooting and arson attack, BBC reports

At least four people were killed and eight others injured after a gunman drove a vehicle into a Michigan church, opened fire and set the building ablaze, before being killed himself, BBC reports. Officials said the attack on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, a town 60 miles (100km) northwest of Detroit, happened during a Sunday service attended by hundreds of people. The suspect, identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, from Burton, Michigan, was later shot dead by police in the building's car park, the report says. Read the full report here.

 

Thousands in POK erupt in protest against Pak government, India Today

Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) witnessed one of its biggest unrest in recent years, as thousands took to the streets across the region in protest against the Shehbaz Sharif government. India Today reports that the Awami Action Committee (AAC) called the "shutter down wheel-jam" strike across several districts, forcing authorities to deploy heavy security and internet blackout. The protests took place on Sunday in Mirpur, Kotli, Rawalakot, Neelum Valley, Keran, among others. Read the full report here.

 

Myanmar army razed Rohingya villages for security outposts: The Straits Times on UN-backed report

 

After the 2017 expulsion of the Muslim minority Rohingya from Myanmar’s Rakhine state, The Straits Times reports that a UN-backed investigation revealed the military destroyed villages and mosques and repurposed their lands for security outposts. Violence against the Rohingya escalated dramatically in August 2017 when Myanmar’s military launched an operation in response to militant attacks, driving out hundreds of thousands from their homes in the coastal state. Some 1.3 million Rohingya refugees now live in densely packed camps in Bangladesh, the report adds, following the military operation that the UN later described as a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing”.
