Pigeon flies into US flight cabin, passenger tries to catch it, India Today

A pigeon entered a Delta Air Lines flight just before takeoff, sparking a chaotic scene onboard, India Today reports. The report says that the unexpected bird flew inside the cabin as the plane prepared to depart from Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport to Madison, Wisconsin, leading a passenger to try and catch it. Local reports revealed that baggage handlers had already removed one pigeon from the plane before it began to taxi. Read the full report here.

 

Kamal Haasan’s comment triggers linguistic row in Karnataka, Indian Express

 

Actor-politician Kamal Haasan’s remark that Kannada was “born out of Tamil” at a recent film event has triggered a row, with certain Karnataka groups questioning his claim, Indian Express reports. The moment, intended perhaps as a gesture of cultural unity, instead ignited outrage. Within hours, the report says, a pro-Kannada organisation, the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV), lashed out, accusing Haasan of belittling the Kannada language and threatening action against him and his upcoming film. Israel bombs Gaza journalist’s home, killing at least eight: Al Jazeera

At least eight people have been killed in an Israeli attack on the home of Gaza journalist Osama al-Arbid in northern Gaza, Al Jazeera reports. Al-Arbid reportedly survived the strike, with dramatic video showing him being pulled from the rubble of the house, the report says. At least 15 people in total have been killed by Israeli attacks since the early hours of this morning across the Strip. The report further says that at least three Palestinians were killed and 46 wounded after the Israeli military opened fire on crowds who rushed to an aid point run by the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. NDTV on Karnataka, Andhra tug-of-war over state-owned defence manufacturer HAL

The Karnataka government has dismissed reports of any potential relocation of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) production units to Andhra Pradesh, NDTV reports, following Andhra Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's pitch for expanding HAL operations into his state. Naidu has raised the proposal for establishing a new greenfield HAL facility in Andhra Pradesh during his recent engagements with the Union government, including meetings with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The report says the proposal reportedly seeks to house future manufacturing capacity for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas and other upcoming indigenous platforms. Read the full report here.

 

US halts student visa appointments and plans expanded social media vetting, BBC reports

 

BBC reports that US President Donald Trump's administration has ordered embassies to stop scheduling appointments for student visas as it prepares to expand social media vetting of such applicants. In a copy of a memo sent to diplomatic posts, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the pause would last "until further guidance is issued". The message said social media vetting would be stepped up for student and foreign exchange visas, which would have "significant implications" for embassies and consulates. Read the full report here.
