SC asks police to consider bail for Delhi riots conspiracy case accused: Hindustan Times

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Delhi Police to consider whether the accused in the 2020 riots larger conspiracy case could be released on bail, Hindustan Times reports, pointing out that most of them have already spent nearly five years in custody. The bench made the observation while refusing to grant more time to the police to file counter-affidavits to the bail petitions filed by student activists Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, and Shifa-ur-Rehman. The court directed the police to submit their reply by this week and listed the matter for hearing on Friday (October 31), the report says. Read the full report here.

 

Chief Justice BR Gavai recommends Justice Surya Kant as his successor, Indian Express

 

Chief Justice of India B R Gavai Monday wrote to the Union government recommending Justice Surya Kant as his successor, Indian Express reports. Once notified by the government, Justice Kant will take over as the 53rd Chief Justice when CJI Gavai demits office on November 23. The report mentions that Justice Kant will remain in office till February 9, 2027. Read the full report here.

 

Four killed in Cameroon as protests intensify ahead of presidential results, Al Jazeera reports

Al Jazeera reports that at least four people have been killed in Cameroon’s largest city, Douala, as police and opposition protesters clashed ahead of the announcement of presidential election results, according to the regional governor. The clashes on Sunday came after hundreds of supporters of opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma – who claims to have defeated President Paul Biya in recent elections – defied a protest ban and gathered in the streets of Douala. The protesters barricaded roads, burned tyres and threw rocks and other projectiles at police, the report adds. Read the full report here.

 

India Today: Shreyas Iyer in ICU in Sydney after internal bleeding from rib injury

India's ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a hospital in Sydney and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), India Today reports, after suffering internal bleeding resulting from a rib cage injury sustained during the third match against Australia. The report mentions that Iyer, who had taken a brilliant catch running backwards from backward point to dismiss Alex Carey, appeared to have hurt his left rib cage in the process and was rushed to the hospital soon after returning to the dressing room on Saturday. Rebel group claims capture of key city in Sudan, BBC reports

 

Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) says it has taken control of the western city of el-Fasher, marking a turning point in the civil war. BBC reports that the group said in a statement on social media that it had seized el-Fasher "from the grip of mercenaries and militias allied with the terrorist army". The loss would be a huge blow to the Sudanese army as el-Fasher is its last remaining foothold in the Darfur region, leaving the RSF effectively in control of the area. Read the full report here.
