The Hindu: Protesters attack ED officials’ vehicle outside Pinarayi Vijayan’s house in Kerala capital after raids

Violence broke out outside Kerala Opposition Leader and former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's residence on Wednesday, The Hindu reports, after Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials completed a raid and were leaving the premises. According to visuals shown on news channels, suspected CPI(M) workers gathered outside Vijayan's rented home and protested against the raid. The situation escalated as some protesters blocked the vehicle carrying ED officials and threw stones at it, the report says. Read the full report here.

 

India power demand hits record 270 GW, NDTV reports

 

India's electricity grid just crossed a historic threshold. Last week, peak power demand surged to a record 270 GW, NDTV reports. It adds that this is not because factories suddenly ramped up production, but because millions of homes in sweltering cities refused to stay hot. What was once a seasonal heatwave has morphed into a structural "grid wave", it says. On May 21, when the grid hit 270 GW, solar power contributed a robust 80 GW (about 22% of supply). But as the sun set, that clean energy vanished, forcing a rapid ramp-up of coal and gas plants, it adds. Read the full report here.

 

Minorities at World Cup fear ICE threat and how US immigration is enforced

Seventy-eight of the 104 World Cup matches will be held in the US, which is cohosting the June 11-July 19 tournament with Canada and Mexico. Al Jazeera reports that the possibility of ICE activity around US matches has led to concerns among the Hispanic community, which comprises 20 percent of the US population and is concentrated in California, Texas and Florida states, with significant representation in big cities such as Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas and New York. BJP MP claims 50 Trinamool MLAs, 20 MPs ready to defect as Bengal turmoil deepens: India Today

As per a report by India Today, BJP MP Saumitra Khan on Wednesday claimed that around 50 Trinamool MLAs and 20 MPs were unhappy with the ruling party and were prepared to switch to the BJP if the party’s central leadership gave the go-ahead. Khan said the Trinamool Congress would cease to exist as a political force if the BJP leadership decided to induct the leaders allegedly in contact with the party. Dozens killed in Lebanon as Israel intensifies strikes, BBC reports

 

BBC reports that dozens of people were killed in an intensive wave of Israeli strikes across southern and eastern Lebanon on Tuesday, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to step up military action against Hezbollah. At least 31 people were killed in the latest attacks, including several children, Lebanon's health ministry said. The report adds that the Israeli military said it hit more than 100 Hezbollah infrastructure sites and fighters in what was one of the heaviest nights of bombardment since a US-brokered ceasefire began in mid-April.
