Court says WhatsApp chats can’t be substantive evidence, Indian Express
WhatsApp chats cannot be “substantive evidence”, a Delhi court has ruled in five murder cases lodged during the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots. Indian Express reports, it ruled that these chats can at best be used as “a corroborative piece of evidence”. In all five cases, where the 12 accused are common, the prosecution had relied heavily on WhatsApp chats as evidence, the report says. These are among nine cases filed in connection with the murder of nine men, whose bodies were recovered a week after the riots. Of the remaining four cases, one has ended in acquittal and three are at the stage of final arguments and statements of the accused. Read the full report here.
IMD predicts more rain as waterlogged Mumbai limps back to normalcy, Hindustan Times
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday forecast generally cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rainfall for Mumbai and surrounding areas, Hindustan Times reports, a day after heavy rain disrupted life in the Maharashtra capital by causing waterlogging. The weather office predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, along with the rain, the report adds. There was a lull in the incessant rainfall in Mumbai on Tuesday morning. Israeli military aims to take over 75% of Gaza within two months: The Straits Times
Israel’s military push in Gaza aims to take over 75 percent of the small coastal strip within two months, containing some two million people into three areas, The Straits Times reports according to Israeli media accounts of a military briefing. The offensive is aimed at finally defeating Hamas, or forcing the exile of its leadership and pressing the militant group to release the remaining hostages taken on Oct 7, 2023, according to media reports, including from Haaretz. The entire population of the Gaza Strip, just 365 sq km in total, would be forced into three areas comprising 25 per cent of the territory, the report says. Read the full report here.
India's Shubhanshu Shukla begins final isolation phase before Space Station Mission, NDTV reports
Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla has entered a pre-launch quarantine alongside his three international crewmates, NDTV reports, in preparation for the upcoming Axiom Mission-4 (Ax-4) to the International Space Station (ISS). The mission is scheduled for launch on June 8 from NASA's Kennedy Space Center aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. The report says that Shukla will become the first Indian astronaut to visit the ISS, taking on the role of pilot. Read the full report here.
BBC on Greek coastguards charged over 2023 migrant shipwreck
BBC reports that a naval court in Greece has charged 17 coastguards over the deadliest migrant boat disaster in the Mediterranean Sea for a decade. Up to 650 people were feared to have drowned when the overcrowded Adriana fishing vessel sank near Pylos, off the Greek coast, in the early hours of 14 June 2023. Survivors later told the BBC that Greek coastguards had caused their boat to capsize in a botched attempt to tow it and then silenced witnesses. The Greek authorities have always denied the claims against them. Read the full report here.
