Europe's Ursula von der Leyen on India-EU trade deal: Hindustan Times

India and the European Union on Tuesday confirmed that they had signed a historic trade pact, Hindustan Times reports. In a press release, the EU later said that it would save €4 billion every year in duties as India has agreed to cut down, and in some cases eliminate, tariffs on nearly 97% goods imported from Europe. The report adds that earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the ‘mother of all deals’ and said that it was a “perfect” example of partnership between two major economies on the global stage. Adani lawyers seek time until January 30 to update US court on talks with SEC, Indian Express

 

Indian Express reports that lawyers representing Gautam and Sagar Adani have sought time until January 30 from the US court for reporting the status of their discussion with the US securities regulator on its motion seeking service of summons through email. On January 22, the day after the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a motion for an order authorising Alternative Service Methods, New York law firm Sullivan and Cromwell LLP contacted the SEC on behalf of the Adanis to discuss the matter. The next day, the Adani lawyers requested the Court for the Eastern District of New York to defer its ruling on the SEC’s motion pending their parley with the US regulator. Immigration chief at centre of Trump's crackdown set to leave Minneapolis, BBC reports

A top US immigration official is expected to leave the US city of Minneapolis, BBC reports, in what may mark a shift in the White House's tone after the fatal shooting of a second US citizen by federal officers over the weekend. As Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino and some immigration agents depart, "border tsar" Tom Homan will begin leading on-the-ground efforts in the Minnesota city after the shooting of Alex Pretti on Saturday escalated tensions. The report says that the decision by President Donald Trump may indicate the administration's interest in walking back more aggressive federal action in his nationwide immigration crackdown. NDTV reports, 50 carcasses of migratory birds found in Assam district

Carcasses of around 50 migratory birds were found at different parts in Assam's Majuli district on Monday, NDTV reports, with authorities suspecting poisoning as the cause. According to reports, the carcasses were recovered from agriculture fields in the Kamargaon area and nearby localities. Police have detained 17 people for interrogation. The report also says as per officials that among them, eight birds that survived the suspected poisoning are currently undergoing treatment at the Ratanpur Veterinary Hospital. Tokyo says North Korea fires ballistic missile towards Japan coast: The Straits Times

 

North Korea fired what appeared to be two ballistic missiles towards the Sea of Japan (also known as East Sea) on Tuesday, Tokyo said. The Straits Times reports that South Korea’s Joint Chief of Staff also said it had detected a “projectile” being fired towards what Seoul calls the East Sea. Japan’s coast guard, citing the defence ministry, said it had detected two ballistic missiles and that both were estimated to have already splashed down. Read the full report here.
