Indian Express: IMD issues ‘red’ alert for Mumbai, 3 other districts

As heavy rain lashed Maharashtra, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday afternoon issued a ‘red’ alert for Mumbai and neighbouring districts of Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri, Indian Express reports. The IMD said these districts would receive “extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places.” The report says that the weather department had earlier upgraded its ‘yellow’ alert to ‘orange’ for Mumbai, and the districts of Thane and Raigad. India reports over 1,000 active Covid cases, India Today reports

 

India reported as many as 752 new Covid-19 cases in the last one week, India Today reports, with the spike in infections taking the country’s overall caseload to over 1,000. Kerala, Maharashtra and Delhi were the states that saw the most number of new infections in the last one week. Kerala reported 335 fresh infections, taking its total active cases to 430 while Maharashtra and Delhi saw 153 and 99 new cases respectively, the report says. Maduro triumphs in Venezuelan election boycotted by opposition, Al Jazeera

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s governing party has swept parliamentary and regional elections that were boycotted by the opposition. Al Jazeera reports that preliminary results released by the National Electoral Council (CNE) on Monday showed that the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) and its allies won 82.68 percent of votes cast the previous day for seats in the National Assembly. That result ensures that the party will maintain control of key levers of power, including the attorney general’s office and the country’s top court, the report says. Read the full report here.

 

NIA arrests CRPF personnel in Delhi for allegedly spying for Pakistan: Hindustan Times

Hindustan Times reports that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a CRPF personnel for allegedly sharing sensitive information with Pakistan's intelligence officers. The anti-terror agency said in a statement that Moti Ram Jat was involved in espionage activities for Pakistan and had been sharing classified information on national security with Pakistani intelligence officers since 2023. The man was arrested in Delhi. Moti Ram Jat has been remanded to NIA custody till June 6. Read the full report here.

 

Trump extends EU tariff deadline to July 9, The Straits Times

 

US President Donald Trump said that he would pause his threatened 50 percent tariffs on the European Union until July 9, The Straits Times reports, after a “very nice call” with EU chief Ursula von der Leyen. Trump had threatened on May 23 to invoke the steep tariffs as soon as June 1, saying talks with the EU over his previous levies were “going nowhere”.Dr von der Leyen had earlier said on X that she held a “good call” with Trump, but that “to reach a good deal, we would need the time until July 9”.
