Hindustan Times live on Jammu rains: 9 dead, another bridge down

Heavy rainfall for a third consecutive day across parts of Jammu led several rivers to flow above or close to the danger mark, Hindustan Times reports. Rain-triggered landslides and mudslides also resulted in the closure of many roads, including the Jammu-Srinagar national highway. The report says at least three persons were killed, two in Gandoh and one in Thathri, in separate rain-related incidents. Five persons were killed while 14 others sustained injuries after a landslide hit a shed located en-route to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. Read the full report here.

 

Indian Express: NCLAT Judge steps aside after claim of pressure

 

In an unprecedented order, a judicial member of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) recused from a case after recording in an order that “ one of the most revered members of the higher judiciary of this country” had tried to influence the outcome of the case. Indian Express reports that the case was reserved for orders on June 18, and parties were allowed an additional week to file their written submissions. The curious case involves insolvency proceedings being brought against a Hyderabad-based real estate company, KLSR Infratech Ltd. Read the full report here.

 

Manhunt under way after two police officers shot dead in rural Australian town, BBC reports

A huge manhunt is under way for a "heavily armed" male suspect after two Australian police officers were shot dead and one injured in an ambush at a property in a small rural town in the state of Victoria. BBC reports that police described the situation in Porepunkah in the Australian Alps - some 300km (186 miles) north-east of Melbourne - as an "active incident" with hundreds of personnel deployed to find the suspect. Officers were attacked as 10 of them attended the property to serve an arrest warrant, which Australian media said was for historical sex offences, the report says. Read the full report here.

 

Mosquito terminator train launched in Delhi to curb vector-borne diseases, India Today

In a bid to combat mosquito breeding and curb vector-borne diseases in the Capital, the Northern Railway, in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), flagged off the ‘Mosquito Terminator Train’ from the New Delhi railway station on Friday, India Today reports. The initiative was formally launched by Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, with Pushpesh Raman Tripathi, Divisional Railway Manager (Delhi), and senior officials from the Delhi Division present at the occasion. The project aims to prevent mosquito breeding along railway tracks, particularly in areas prone to stagnant water collection, the report says. Read the full report here.

 

Pakistan evacuates thousands as India releases water from swollen rivers: A Jazeera

 

Al Jazeera reports that Pakistani officials have started evacuating tens of thousands of people after neighbouring India released water from overflowing dams and swollen rivers into low-lying border regions. The move on Tuesday came a day after New Delhi alerted Islamabad about possible cross-border flooding, the first public diplomatic contact between the two countries since a four-day war in May. The latest flood alert and evacuation drive by Pakistan comes as heavy monsoon rains continue to batter both South Asian countries, with at least 800 people reported killed in Pakistan since late June, the report says.
