Indian Express report: Notice against Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav pending
The impeachment notice by 54 Rajya Sabha MPs against Allahabad High Court judge Justice Shekhar Yadav for a controversial speech by him at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad event last year is confirmed to have been signed by at least 50 MPs, The Indian Express has learnt. That is the minimum required to move forward. According to Rajya Sabha sources, so far only 44 of those MPs have verified their signatures after the secretariat sought their responses via emails and calls in March and May this year. Al Jazeera's live updates on Israel-Iran ceasefire
Israel has agreed to US President Donald Trump’s proposal for a ceasefire with Iran, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement, Al Jazeera reports, after Trump said the truce is now in effect and urged both sides not to violate it. The announcements came after Iran launched several volleys of missiles at Israel, killing at least four people in the southern city of Beersheba. The report adds that earlier, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said there’s no agreement on a ceasefire with Israel, but that Tehran will halt attacks if Israel stops its “illegal aggression” by 4am local time. ICC punishes Rishabh Pant for 'showing dissent' at umpire, Hindustan Times
India’s wicket-keeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who has had an impressive outing at Headingley, scoring two centuries in the opening Test match against England, was handed an official reprimand on Monday, Hindustan Times reports. The action was taken for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the match. Pant was punished for his outburst at the on-field umpire during England’s first innings with the bat, the report says. Read the full report here.
Japan PM to face tough Upper House election on July 20, The Straits Times
Japan will hold an Upper House election on July 20, The Straits Times reports as per the government, with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba battling low approval ratings driven partly by public frustration over inflation. Ishiba, 68, has been head of a minority government since October 2024, when he led the ruling coalition to its worst general election result in 15 years, the report says. Voters in Tokyo on June 22 also knocked his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) from its position as the largest group in the city assembly, in a local election seen as a bellwether for the upcoming national vote. India Today on Maharashtra girl beaten to death by father for low marks in NEET mock test
A 17-year-old girl from Sangli district in Maharashtra died after allegedly being brutally beaten by her father for underperforming in a medical National Eligibility cum Entrance Test exam. India Today reports that the accused, identified as Dhondiram Bhagwan Bhosale, a 50-year-old principal of a private educational institution, has been arrested and remanded to police custody. According to police, the victim, Sadhana, a Class 12 student, was preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and had recently performed poorly in a preparatory test.
