SP leader Azam Khan walks out of jail after 23 months, Indian Express

Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, who is facing multiple cases, walked out of the Sitapur jail today after 23 months, Indian Express reports. He was scheduled to be released early Tuesday morning, but it was delayed due to impending court proceedings. The report says that hundreds of supporters gathered outside the Sitapur jail, waiting for the SP leader to walk out of prison. Azam Khan’s son Adeeb also arrived outside the prison premises to welcome his father. Ahead of Azam Khan’s release, the district administration in Sitapur imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the area to prevent any untoward incident. Kolkata sinks amid Pujo fervour, Hindustan Times reports

 

Parts of West Bengal's Kolkata were heavily waterlogged on Tuesday, September 23, after heavy overnight rain lashed the city amid Durga Puja fervour, Hindustan Times reports. At least four people died of electrocution in rain-hit areas of Kolkata, officials said. Several areas in and around Kolkata, including Jadavpur, Baghajatin, Salt Lake, Golf Green, saw knee-deep waterlogging that brought traffic, public transport and daily life to a grinding halt. Trump to address UN General Assembly after France recognises Palestinian state, BBC reports

France has formally recognised a Palestinian state, becoming the latest in a wave of countries to take the step, BBC reports. Speaking at the UN in New York, President Emmanuel Macron said "the time for peace has come" and that "nothing justifies the ongoing war in Gaza". US President Donald Trump is due to address the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, as will the leaders of key regional players such as Jordan and Qatar, the report adds. On Monday, the US did not attend a one-day summit hosted by France and Saudi Arabia which focused on plans for a two-state solution to the conflict. Read the full report here.

 

NDTV on 2 killed, 12 injured in Indore building collapse

A major tragedy struck Madhya Pradesh's Indore on Monday when a multi-story building suddenly collapsed, NDTV reports, killing two persons and injuring at least 12 others, including a three-month-old baby girl. The victims were identified as Alfia and Faheem, whose bodies were recovered from the rubble after hours of intensive rescue efforts. Four of the injured are in critical condition and are undergoing treatment at MY Hospital. According to officials, the report adds, four families were living in the building. Schools shut, flights cancelled as Super Typhoon Ragasa nears Hong Kong: The Straits Times

 

Hong Kong shut schools and cancelled flights on Tuesday as Super Typhoon Ragasa was set to slam into the financial centre with a force that officials warned would be among the most destructive in the city’s recent history. The Straits Times reports that the powerful storm posed a wide threat to lives and homes, prompting the authorities in mainland China to order businesses and schools to shut down in at least 10 cities across the nation’s south. The report adds that the storm had already toppled trees, torn the roofs off buildings and killed at least one person in a landslide while lashing the northern Philippines, where thousands sought shelter in schools and evacuation centres.
