NDTV on opposition MLAs walking out over Governor's address in Assam Assembly

Opposition on Friday staged a walkout from the Assam assembly, expressing dissatisfaction over Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya's address, NDTV reports. The Opposition alleged that several important public issues, including rising prices and the alleged syndicate system in the state, were not adequately addressed in the speech. Barely five minutes into the governor's speech on the second day of the session, some Opposition lawmakers trooped into the Well of the House, the report says. Delhi HC pulls up WFI over Vinesh Phogat’s exclusion from 2026 Asian Games: Hindustan Times

 

The Delhi high court on Friday pulled up the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) over its decision to declare wrestler Vinesh Phogat “ineligible” to participate in domestic competitions and asked the Centre to constitute an expert panel to assess her case, Hindustan Times reports. Hearing Phogat’s appeal against a single-judge order passed on May 18, the report says that a bench comprising Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia questioned the federation’s stand and observed that its departure from the earlier practice of allowing reputed athletes to compete “speaks volumes”. The court directed the Centre to ensure that Phogat, who is seeking a return to wrestling after a maternity break, is allowed to participate in the selection trials for this year’s Asian Games scheduled for May 30 and 31. Alberta to hold referendum on whether to remain in Canada, BBC reports

BBC reports that Alberta will hold a referendum on whether the province should remain in Canada or move ahead with a second binding vote on separation, marking the first significant test of the country's unity in decades. Thursday's announcement by Premier Danielle Smith comes after a citizen-led petition calling for separation gathered more than 3,00,000 signatures early this year and a separate petition advocating that Alberta stay gathered more than 4,00,000. The report states that a restive independence movement has been growing in the oil-rich province, built on a long-held sense that Alberta is overlooked by decision-makers in Ottawa. Bihar cracks down on banned Thai Mangur fish trade in statewide raids, India Today

The Bihar Fisheries Department has intensified its crackdown on the illegal trade and sale of banned Thai Mangur fish across the state, India Today reports, carrying out raids and seizure operations against traders dealing in the prohibited species. Officials have been confiscating large consignments of the fish and disposing of them by burying the stock underground as part of the destruction process. The report mentions that the Thai Mangur, also known as the walking catfish, is a highly predatory and invasive species banned in India as authorities consider it harmful to the environment, native fish populations and potentially to human health. Al Jazeera: US deepens European uncertainty with deployment of 5,000 troops to Poland

 

United States President Donald Trump has announced plans to deploy an additional 5,000 troops to Poland. Al Jazeera reports that Trump announced the surprise deployment on social media late on Thursday, citing his friendship with right-wing Polish President Karol Nawrocki. As per the report, the move came days after a planned deployment to Poland was apparently scrapped and will deepen uncertainty surrounding the Trump administration’s approach to NATO allies and its long-term commitment to maintaining a military presence in Europe.
