Indian Express: Siddaramaiah and Tejasvi Surya respond as Bengaluru SBI manager's Kannada remark

Indian Express reports that a viral video of a State Bank of India manager refusing to speak in Kannada to a customer at a Bengaluru branch has drawn criticism, including from Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and BJP MP Tejasvi Surya. In the video, shot at SBI’s Surya Nagar branch in Chandapura, the bank manager is seen arguing with a customer and walking away after stating, “I will never speak Kannada.” When asked by the customer to follow the Reserve Bank of India’s guidelines and respect the local language, the manager dismissively responds, “This is India.” The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) protested on Wednesday demanding SBI sack the manager for “disrespecting” Kannada-speaking customers and failing to offer services in the local language, the report says. Supreme Court raps Enforcement Directorate over Tamil Nadu raids, NDTV reports

 

The Supreme Court on Thursday rebuked the Enforcement Directorate for "crossing all limits" and violating the concept of federal governance, referring to raids - in March and last week - of state-run liquor shops in Tamil Nadu. NDTV reports that the raids were over allegations of corruption in the grant of shop licences. An irked court directed the federal agency to stand down for now. A bench led by Chief Justice BR Gavai told the ED, "You may register cases against individuals... but corporations? Your ED is passing all limits! Issue notice, returnable after vacation." BBC on suspect detained after Israeli embassy staff shot dead in US

Two Israeli embassy staff were shot dead outside a Jewish museum in downtown Washington DC by a man who police say shouted "free, free Palestine" after the attack, BBC reports. The victims, a young couple, were shot while leaving an event at the Capital Jewish Museum, DC police said, adding that the incident appears targeted. The shooting happened at 21:05 local time, the report says, in an area with numerous tourist sites, museums and government buildings, including the FBI's Washington field office. 2 terrorists killed in J&K in ongoing operation, India Today

Two terrorists were killed in an ongoing encounter in Singhpora Chatroo on Thursday, India Today reports. The encounter broke out in the morning between security forces and terrorists in the Singhpora area of Chatroo in Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir. Codenamed 'Operation Trashi', the joint operation saw the deployment of additional troops after the gunbattle erupted. The report says that efforts are on to neutralise the terrorists, the Army’s White Knight Corps said in a post on X. Read the full report here.

 

Al Jazeera: South Sudan on edge as Sudan’s war threatens vital oil industry

 

South Sudan relies on oil for more than 90 percent of its government revenues, and the country depends entirely on Sudan to export the precious resource, Al Jazeera reports. But this month, Sudan’s army-backed government said it was preparing to shut down the facilities that its southern neighbour uses to export its oil, according to an official government letter seen by Al Jazeera. That decision could collapse South Sudan’s economy and drag it directly into Sudan’s intractable civil war between the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), experts warned.
