India Today on Amit Shah's remarks: Those who speak English will soon feel ashamed
Amid a simmering language row, Union Home Minister Amit Shah opened another front by asserting that those who speak English in the country would soon feel ashamed, India Today reports. Speaking at a book launch event, the Home Minister underscored that native languages were central to India's identity and should take precedence over foreign tongues. Amit Shah's remarks come at a time when some southern and opposition-ruled states have accused the Centre of imposing Hindi through the implementation of the 'three-language formula' that is a part of the New Education Policy (NEP). Monsoon to cover most parts of north, northwest India in next 2-3 days: Hindustan Times
Monsoon is expected to cover the remaining parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad in Pakistan, over the next two to three days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday. Hindustan Times reports that Conditions are also favourable for further advancement of the annual Southwest monsoon over some parts of Punjab and Haryana during this period. Hurricane Erick 'extremely dangerous' as it nears Mexico, BBC reports
Hurricane Erick has strengthened into an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 storm, as it heads towards Mexico's Pacific coast, BBC reports as per the US National Hurricane Center (NHC). Maximum sustained winds in the storm were near 220km/h early on Thursday local time. The report says that forecasters expect it to make landfall in the coming hours with the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero state most likely to be impacted by what the NHC says could be "devastating wind damage". Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum told people in the storm's path to "stay tuned to official communications, to stay indoors, and not go out". Read the full report here.
Another woman gang-raped in Odisha, 3rd such incident in 3 days
A woman in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district was allegedly raped by four men, police said on Thursday. NDTV reports that this is the third such incident in the state in three days. According to the complaint lodged by the 31-year-old victim's husband, four men known to the family entered their house located under Baripada Sadar police station area when her husband and other family members were not there. The four forcibly took her to a place in the jurisdiction of another police station and took turns in raping her, the report adds. Read the full report here.
Iranian missiles strike Israel as nuclear reactor attacked in Iran, Al Jazeera
Iranian missiles caused serious damage at four sites in central and southern Israel, including at the Soroka hospital, Al Jazeera reports, while Israeli forces are reported to have attacked Iran’s Arak heavy water nuclear reactor. S President Donald Trump said he’s still weighing his options on United States military intervention in the escalating hostilities. Earlier, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned the US that any strikes on its territory would have “serious irreparable consequences”. The death toll from Israel’s attacks on Iran has risen to more than 240, including 70 women and children. At least 24 people have been killed in Iranian attacks on Israel, the report adds.
