The Centre on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that it had no objection to Ladakhi climate activist Sonam Wangchuk sharing his notes on his detention with the lawyer of his wife, Gitanjali Angmo, who has approached the top court challenging his detention, Indian Express reports. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, conveyed this to a bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria, which then adjourned the hearing till October 29, giving time to Angmo to make some changes to her petition. Hindustan Times reports that the Janata Dal (United) on Wednesday released its first list of 57 candidates for the upcoming Bihar assembly election. The list was unveiled after days of discussions within the party leadership over seat distribution as part of the NDA alliance. Among the notable candidates, Anant Singh has been fielded from the Mokama constituency, a seat that has been a focal point in recent political discussions. Hamas has handed over the bodies of four more Israelis to the Red Cross, bringing the number of released deceased captives to eight, Al Jazeera reports. Three bodies have been identified by family, while Israeli army says fourth does not match any recorded captive. The report adds that Israel says it will only allow half the agreed number of aid trucks into Gaza and has delayed the opening of the Rafah Crossing, citing the slow release of the dead captives. India has about 22,446 Wild Elephants, shows first DNA-based census, NDTV reports
India's wild elephant population stands at 22,446, according to the latest All-India Synchronous Elephant Estimation (SAIEE) 2025, released by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) on Tuesday. NDTV reports that the figure is approximately 17% lower than the 2017 estimate of 27,312. Scientists said the two figures were not directly comparable because advanced genetic methods, not visual counts, were used this time around. The census, conducted jointly by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Project Elephant, and the WII, is India's first-ever DNA-based elephant count. Read the full report here.
Bangladesh garment factory fire kills at least 16, BBC reports
At least 16 people have died after a huge fire broke out at a garment factory in Bangladesh, NDTV reports, with officials warning that the toll could rise. Sixteen bodies have been recovered and would be handed to families after DNA testing, as they have been burnt beyond recognition, the fire service said. The report says that distraught relatives gathered outside the four-storey factory in Dhaka's Mirpur area on Tuesday in search of their loved ones still missing. Read the full report here.
