All 9 accused sentenced to life term in 2019 Pollachi sexual assault: Indian Express
In a verdict six years in the making, Indian Express reports that the Mahila Court in Coimbatore on Tuesday convicted all nine accused in the 2019 Pollachi sexual assault case and awarded them life imprisonment. The nine men were found guilty of multiple charges, including criminal conspiracy, sexual harassment, rape, gangrape and extortion. The incident, which came out just weeks before the 2019 general elections, led to Tamil Nadu’s then ruling AIADMK getting politically cornered with allegations of inaction and links to the accused, the report says. Maharashtra secretariat receives anonymous bomb threat email, Hindustan Times
An email warning of a bomb blast was received at the Mantralaya, administrative headquarters of the Maharashtra government situated in south Mumbai, Hindustan Times reports. The anonymous email received by the official posted at the Disaster Management Control Room on Monday evening said there would be a blast within 48 hours but did not mention any place. The report says that police conducted a search of the sprawling complex but nothing suspicious was found. Read the full report here.
The Straits Times: Ousted Bangladesh PM Hasina’s party barred from election
The Straits Times reports Bangladesh’s Election Commission has suspended the registration of ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, effectively barring the party from contesting the next national elections. The move comes after the interim government of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus banned all activities of the Awami League under the Anti-Terrorism Act after days of protests, the report says. The government cited national security threats and an ongoing war crimes investigation against the party’s top leadership over the deaths of hundreds of protesters. Read the full report here.
3 terrorists killed in encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian, NDTV reports
Three terrorists have been killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian, NDTV reports. Another terrorist could be present in the area. The encounter initially began in Kulgam and then shifted to a forest area in Shopian. The report adds that security personnel of the Army and paramilitary forces have been fighting the terrorists for about two hours now. Palestinian journalist among two killed in Israeli attack on Gaza hospital, Al Jazeera
Israel’s army has admitted to carrying out “a targeted attack” on the Nasser Medical Complex in the city of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, killing two people, including Palestinian journalist Hassan Eslaih. Al Jazeera reports that Gaza’s Government Media Office on Tuesday confirmed the killing of Eslaih, who was receiving treatment at the hospital’s burn unit for severe injuries sustained during an April 7 Israeli strike on a media tent located next to the hospital. A hospital worker who gave his name as Abu Ghali said the Israeli bombardment “does not differentiate between civilians and military targets”, the report adds. Read the full report here.
