Pune civic polls only after September 4, Indian Express reports
With the state government declaring a timeline for the ward delimitation process for civic polls, Indian Express reports that it is clear that the elections of Pune Municipal Corporation will be held only after September 4. In a move to pave the way for the long-pending municipal corporation elections, the Maharashtra Urban Development Department Tuesday issued notifications detailing the procedure for finalising ward boundaries across the state. Hindustan Times on Air India plane crash: DNA matching underway
As the country mourns the loss of lives in the devastating crash of an Air India Boeing 787 shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, authorities have intensified efforts to identify the victims through DNA sampling. As rescue and recovery operations continue at the crash site, Hindustan Times reports that the focus is also on the process of DNA identification, a critical step in bringing closure to grieving families. UN agencies warn of looming famine in conflict-stricken South Sudan, TeleSUR
Three United Nations agencies have issued an urgent warning about imminent famine in South Sudan’s Upper Nile state, where conflict and food shortages have pushed 32,000 people into catastrophic hunger conditions three times more than previously estimated, TeleSUR reports. The World Food Programme (WFP), UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report that 11 out of 13 counties in Upper Nile are facing emergency levels of hunger. The region has been devastated by ongoing clashes between government forces and armed militias, which have destroyed homes, disrupted livelihoods, and blocked humanitarian aid deliveries. Early monsoon arrival expected in Delhi, India Today reports
India Today reports that the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Delhi 10 days ahead of its scheduled arrival. Typically, the monsoon arrives in Delhi around June 30, but an India Meteorological Department (IMD) report suggests it could make its presence felt as early as the third week of June. Israel targets Iran's nuclear sites and military commanders in major attack, BBC reports
Israel's military said Iran has fired about 100 drones towards its territory, BBC reports, after Israel launched a major attack on Iran overnight. The IDF says it carried out strikes on and says Revolutionary Guard chief Hossein Salami and other commanders have been killed. Iranian state TV said residential areas in Tehran were hit and civilians were among those killed - including children. The report says that the attack is part of Operation Rising Lion, Israel's PM says, adding Iran was a threat to "Israel's very survival".
