Hyderabad roads flooded as heavy rain causes waterlogging in key areas: Hindustan Times
Hindustan Times reports that heavy rain hit parts of Hyderabad on Wednesday night, leading to severe waterlogging on several main roads. Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams were deployed to clear water in areas like Santosh Nagar and Champapet. The report says that the Southwest monsoon rainfall over India, which had stalled for nearly two weeks after the early onset this year, is likely to become active again starting Thursday. Indian Express on passenger plane crash in Ahmedabad, Indian Express
An Air India flight carrying at least 195 people, besides crew members, crashed in Ahmedabad’s Meghani area near the city’s airport Thursday afternoon, Indian Express reports. In videos shared online, smoke was seen emanating from the Adani airport premises. The aircraft, a Boeing Dreamliner, took off around 1.47 pm, slightly delayed from schedule, the report says. US evacuates personnel from Middle East in sign of growing regional tension, Al Jazeera
The United States is preparing a partial evacuation of its embassy in Iraq and has authorised “the voluntary departure” of dependants of US personnel from locations across the Middle East, including Bahrain, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, as regional security concerns rise. Al Jazeera reports that US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement on Wednesday that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had authorised the departure of military dependants in the region and that CENTCOM was “monitoring the developing tension”. Speaking on Wednesday evening, US President Donald Trump said the order to move staff out had been given because the region “could be a dangerous place”. Read the full report here.
Taiwan jails China captain for undersea cable sabotage in landmark case, BBC reports
BBC reports that a Chinese national has been sentenced to three years in prison for damaging an undersea cable connecting Taiwan's main island and the Penghu islands in the Taiwan Strait. The man, identified by his surname Wang, was the captain of the Togolese-registered vessel Hong Tai 58. The Tainan District Court's verdict on Thursday marks the first sentencing after reports in recent years of undersea cables around Taiwan being severed, the report said. Read the full report here.
Families arrested in LA Ice raids held in basements with little food or water, The Guardian
As federal agents rushed to arrest immigrants across Los Angeles, The Guardian reports that they confined detainees – including families with small children – in a stuffy office basement for days without sufficient food and water, according to immigration lawyers. The report says that the harrowing details are the first to emerge about the conditions that people are being held in following the immigration raids targeting LA-area businesses and neighborhoods. To quell the widespread protests that followed, Donald Trump sent in military troops despite opposition from California leaders.
