Hindustan Times: Searches underway in J&K after villagers report suspicious movement in Samba

Security forces on Wednesday launched a search operation along Dhar road in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir after villagers reported movement of two suspected terrorists, Hindustan Times reports. The operation is underway but so far there was no trace of the suspected persons who are said to be wearing combat uniforms, the officials said. The report adds as per the officials that some villagers reportedly noticed the suspected persons near a school in the vicinity of Nud village during the intervening night and accordingly informed the police. Stalemate at Goa Medical College ends with visit by CM Sawant, Indian Express

 

The protesting doctors at the Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital, who had been demanding a public apology from Health Minister Vishwajit Rane after a video went viral of him reprimanding the chief medical officer, called off their impending strike after Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the hospital. Indian Express reports that the strike was called off after Sawant agreed to the demands put forward by the doctors, including the demand for protocols to end “VIP culture” in hospitals. US, China officials agree on plan to ramp down trade tensions: The Straits Times

The United States and China agreed to a preliminary plan to ease trade tensions, The Straits Times reports, which could revive the flow of sensitive goods between the world’s two largest economies. American and Chinese negotiators in London said both sides agreed on a framework on how to implement the consensus the two sides reached in the prior round of talks in Geneva. The report says that the US and Chinese delegations will now take the proposal back to their respective leaders, according to China’s chief trade negotiator Li Chenggang. Covid-19 claims 6 lives in last 24 hours, India Today

Covid-19 cases in India continued to witness a gradual uptick, with 306 fresh infections being reported from across the country in the past 24 hours and active tally surging to 7,121, according to official data shared by the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday. India Today reports that six deaths, one in Maharashtra, three in Kerala and 2 in Karnataka, were also reported during the same period. Read the full report here.

 

Mass arrests in LA as police enforce night-time curfew, BBC reports

 

Los Angeles police said they are conducting "mass arrests" after mayor Karen Bass declared a curfew for parts of downtown LA, BBC reports. Bass imposed the curfew at 20:00 local time in response to looting and violence during protests against immigration raids. Meanwhile, in Texas, the governor has deployed the National Guard ahead of planned protests, the report adds. Demonstrations have spread to other cities in the US, with multiple arrests in New York.
