Railway Recruitment Boards gives 9,000 jobs in first quarter, Hindustan Times

Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have conducted Computer Based Tests (CBTs) for over 1.86 crore candidates since November 2024 across seven different notifications covering 55,197 vacancies, Hindustan Times reports, paving the way for more than 50,000 appointments in the financial year 2025-26. More than 9,000 appointments have already been issued by RRBs in first quarter of this financial year, the report says. Conducting CBTs for RRB exams is a huge exercise requiring lot of planning and co-ordination, it adds. Read the full report here.

 

Indian Express on RSS chief Bhagwat speaking of 75 and ‘stepping aside’

 

Indian Express reports that Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has suggested that leaders should retire at the age of 75. While the suggestion was made in reference to a little-known anecdote about former Sarkaryawah Moropant Pingale, Bhagwat’s comment has set off speculation given that both he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi turn 75 in September. Al Jazeera, Israel keeps pounding Gaza as signs of starvation grow

Israeli forces intensified air and ground attacks on Gaza, as signs of hunger become visible everywhere across the enclave, according to our team on the ground. Al Jazeera reports that it’s been very difficult watching the death toll rising amid a humanitarian situation that is worsening by the hour. Punjab Assembly passes resolution opposing CISF deployment at Bhakra Dam, NDTV

The Punjab Assembly today passed a resolution opposing the deployment of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at Bhakra-Nangal dam project, India Today reports, stating that the state's own police force is competent to handle the dam's security. The move has reignited a political flashpoint, as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ministers criticised the previous Congress government for approving central security deployment and associated financial commitments. Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema told the House that the earlier Congress-led administration had consented in 2021 to the CISF deployment and agreed to bear half the cost-amounting to Rs 50 crore. The resolution was introduced by Punjab Cabinet Minister Barinder Goyal. The report says it calls on the Centre and the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) to withdraw the CISF deployment and instead utilise Punjab Police personnel for dam security. Kurdish PKK to lay down arms in big step towards ending Turkey conflict, BBC reports

 

After 40 years of armed struggle against the Turkish state, BBC reports that the outlawed Kurdish PKK will hold a ceremony on Friday to mark a symbolic first step in laying down its arms. The disarmament process will start under tight security in Iraqi Kurdistan and is expected to take all summer. Some 40,000 people have been killed since the conflict began, and the PKK is listed as a terror group in Turkey, the US, EU and UK. Its disarmament will be felt not just in Turkey but in Iraq, Syria and Iran, the report mentions. Read the full report here.
