New bridge in Maharashtra becomes skidding zone: India Today

India Today reports that the Palava Bridge, located on the Kalyan-Shil Road, was opened to the public on July 4 in a low-profile event attended by MLA Rajesh More and select Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) workers. The bridge, which was built at a cost of approximately 40 crore, was shut down within two hours of its inauguration due to safety concerns, after multiple minor accidents were reported. Authorities later reopened the bridge after applying fine gravel to improve road grip, but by then, opposition parties including the Thackeray-led Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had already taken the ruling faction to task, the report says. SC asks EC to consider Aadhaar, voter ID, ration cards in Bihar rolls revision: Indian Express

 

The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to stop the Election Commission of India (ECI) from proceeding with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, where assembly elections are due, Indian Express reports. A Bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymalya Bagchi asked the poll body to consider Aadhaar, voter ID and ration cards for the purpose of updating the rolls, but left it to the discretion of the ECI whether to accept or reject them. The Bench said this after Senior Advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, appearing for the ECI, submitted that the list of 11 documents to be considered for the revision exercise is not exhaustive, the report says. Bangladesh tribunal indicts ex-PM Hasina over protester deaths, Al Jazeera

Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has indicted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and two senior officials over alleged crimes against humanity linked to a deadly crackdown on protesters during last year’s July uprising, Al Jazeera reports. The tribunal, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder and comprising justices Shafiul Alam Masud and Mohitul Enam Chowdhury, formally charged Hasina on Thursday, the report says. Proceedings will begin on August 3 with opening statements, followed by the first witness testimony. Read the full report here.

 

Hindustan Times on strong earthquake hitting Haryana, tremors in Delhi-NCR 

Strong tremors were felt across the Delhi-NCR region on Thursday morning after a magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck near Jhajjar in Haryana at 9.04 am. Hindustan Times reports that people in Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon were seen rushing out of buildings and homes. However, no initial loss to any life or damage to any property has been reported. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake had a depth of 10km and was recorded at 9:04am. Read the full report here.

 

Search for survivors after Houthis sink second Red Sea cargo ship in a week, BBC reports

 

Ten crew members have been rescued and at least three others killed after a cargo ship was attacked by Yemen's Houthis and sank in the Red Sea, a European naval mission says. BBC reports that the Liberian-flagged, Greek-operated Eternity C was carrying 25 crew when it sustained significant damage and lost all propulsion after being hit by rocket-propelled grenades fired from small boats on Monday, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency. The report says that the attack continued on Tuesday and search rescue operations commenced overnight. Read the full report here.
