India Today on Supreme Court's warning during EC vs Mamata hearing

India Today reports that the Supreme Court on Monday cautioned the West Bengal government against creating any "impediments" in the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls process, even as it assured that genuine difficulties in the process would be addressed. The warning came during the hearing of petitions challenging the SIR process being conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in the state. The report adds that the court has also extended the deadline to complete scrutiny or applications in Bengal SIR and to finalise data by one week. Read the full report here.

 

Hindustan Times live on Maharashtra Zilla Parishad election results

 

Vote counting for 12 Zilla Parishads and 125 Panchayat Samitis began in Maharashtra today and trends in 129 of the 731 seats have emerged. Hindustan Times reports that, Bharatiya Janata Party was leading in 48 of the 731 seats across 12 councils, Shiv Sena was ahead in 29 seats, followed by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) with 24 at around 10.40 am. The opposition Congress was leading in 12 seats, while the Sena (UBT) was ahead in 10, the report says. The polls were held on Saturday in 12 Zilla Parishads - Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Kolhapur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Parbhani, Dharashiv and Latur. Iran defies US threats to insist on right to enrich uranium, BBC reports

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday ruled out Tehran ever giving up uranium enrichment in its negotiations with Washington, BBC reports, insisting it will not be intimidated by the threat of war with the US. Araghchi told a forum in Tehran, attended by AFP, that his country had little trust in Washington and even doubted that the US side was taking the renewed negotiations seriously. The US and Iran reopened negotiations on February 6 in Oman for the first time since Israel’s 12-day war with the Islamic republic in June 2025. Read the full report here.

 

Tobacco baron's 'drunk' son goes on rampage in speeding 10-Crore Lamborghini, NDTV reports

A speeding Lamborghini, allegedly being driven by the son of tobacco tycoon KK Mishra, triggered chaos in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur after it rammed pedestrians and multiple cars, NDTV reports. At least six people were injured in the incident on Sunday afternoon, the report says, following which the police seized the car. According to eyewitnesses, the driver, Shivam Mishra, was drunk and was driving the luxury car, a Lamborghini Revuelto, at a high speed on Kanpur's VIP road. Read the full report here.

 

Two babies among 53 people dead or missing after boat capsizes off Libya, Al Jazeera

 

A rubber boat ⁠carrying dozens of people has capsized off the coast of ‌Libya, Al Jazeera reports, leaving at least 53 people, including two babies, ⁠dead or missing. In a statement on Monday, the International Organization for ‌Migration (IOM) ‌said the vessel carrying 55 people had overturned north of the coastal city of Zuwara, in northwestern Libya, on February 6. The IOM said its teams provided the two survivors with emergency medical care upon disembarkation, in coordination with the relevant authorities. Read the full report here.
