3 CRPF jawans killed after vehicle falls into gorge in J&K’s Udhampur, Indian Express

Three jawans of the Central Reserve Police Force were killed and many others were injured after a vehicle carrying them had an accident and fell into a gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district on Thursday. Indian Express reports according to official sources that the ill-fated vehicle was plying on the Kandva–Basantgarh road when it plunged into a deep gorge. Police and local residents quickly launched a rescue operation and moved the injured personnel to a nearby hospital for treatment. J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the death of the CRPF personnel. Read the full report here.

 

BBC on Trump's sweeping new tariffs taking effect against dozens of countries

 

US President Donald Trump's sweeping new tariffs on more than 90 countries around the world have come into effect, BBC reports. Just before the deadline for deals to be agreed to cut or avoid the import taxes Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that billions of dollars were now flowing into the US due to tariffs. The report says that earlier, the president hit India with a 50% tariff, which will take effect on 27 August unless it stops buying Russian oil. Trump also threatened a 100% tariff on foreign-made computer chips as he pushes tech firms to invest in the US. Read the full report here.

 

Hindustan Times on Uttarakhand floods: Satellite images show disappearance of buildings, roads

The National Remote Sensing Centre’s post-flash flood satellite images of the upper reaches of Uttarakhand indicate the accumulation of debris in and around Dharali, the disappearance of buildings, roads, and plantations, and sediments and debris covering a stretch of Bhagirathi and Kheer Ganga rivers. Hindustan Times reports that a bridge and what appear to be orchards are also inundated. Experts from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have said they were examining the possibility that a glacier collapse upstream of the channel feeding the Kheer Ganga triggered the floods, the report says. Cambodia and Thailand agree to Asean observers to ensure ceasefire holds: The Straits Times

Cambodia and Thailand’s top defence officials agreed on Thursday to allow observers from the Asean regional bloc to inspect disputed border areas and help ensure hostilities do not resume following a violent five-day conflict that ended in a ceasefire late in July, The Straits Times reports. The South-east Asian neighbours saw the worst fighting in over a decade in July, the report adds, including exchanges of artillery fire and jet fighter bombing runs that claimed at least 43 lives and displaced more than 3,00,000 people on both sides of the border. Fighting continued despite diplomatic interventions from China and Malaysia, chair of the regional bloc Asean, both calling for restraint. Read the full report here.

 

Rahul Gandhi claims fraud in Karnataka rolls, India Today reports

 

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Election Commission was colluding with the BJP to "steal elections" in the country, India Today reports. Addressing a press conference, Gandhi alleged that fake people were being added to voter lists and attempted to validate his point by showing the Karnataka electoral rolls. The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha claimed there was "bhayankar chori" (massive theft) of votes in the Mahadevapura assembly segment of Bangalore Central Lok Sabha seat, the report adds.
