Indian Express: Tatas to make Rafale fighter fuselage in India
The salt-to-software conglomerate Tata group will now make a key equipment used in Rafale fighter jets, Indian Express reports. Tata Advanced Systems on Thursday announced it had signed four production transfer agreements with Dassault Aviation to manufacture Rafale fighter aircraft fuselage for India and other global markets in a fillip for the government’s Make in India push. The report says that this will also mark a significant step forward in strengthening the country’s aerospace manufacturing capabilities and supporting global supply chains. Read the full report here.
Flood situation grim in Arunachal amid relentless rain, Hindustan Times
The flood situation in Arunachal Pradesh remained grim on Thursday as incessant rainfall continued, affecting over 33,000 people in 24 districts of the northeastern state, Hindustan Times reports. At least 12 people have lost their lives due to landslides and floods triggered by monsoon rain this year, while search operations are underway for a missing person, a report from the State Emergency Operation Centre said. As many as 214 villages across various districts with a total population of 33,200 were affected due to flood and landslides, the report says, while most of the major rivers and their tributaries are in high spate but flowing below the normal level. Trump bans travel from 12 countries to the US, BBC reports
US President Donald Trump has signed a ban on travel to the US from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Haiti and Iran, BBC reports, in a bid to "protect Americans from dangerous foreign actors". There are an additional seven countries whose nationals face partial travel restrictions, including Cuba and Venezuela. There are some exemptions, including athletes travelling for major sporting events, some Afghan nationals and dual nationals with citizenship in unaffected countries, the report adds. "We don't want them," Trump said as he announced the ban, while also citing the Colorado attack on Sunday, the report says. Read the full report here.
Top Naxal leader carrying Rs 40 lakh bounty killed in encounter in Chhattisgarh: India Today
A top Naxal leader carrying a bounty of Rs 40 lakh was killed in an encounter with security forces on Thursday in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district. India Today reports that the operation took place in the National Park area, where intelligence inputs had indicated the presence of senior Naxal cadres. Acting on the information, a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Special Task Force (STF) launched a coordinated operation in the forested region. An exchange of fire ensued between the joint forces and the Naxals, continuing from the early hours of the morning, the report says. Read the full report here.
New Zealand parliament suspends Maori MPs who performed protest haka, Al Jazeera
Al Jazeera reports that New Zealand legislators have voted to suspend three MPs who performed a Maori haka in the House to protest against a controversial bill. The MPs from Te Pati Maori – the Maori Party – were handed the toughest sanctions ever imposed on legislators by New Zealand’s parliament on Thursday. Te Pati Maori co-leaders Rawiri Waititi and Debbie Ngarewa-Packer were both suspended from parliament for 21 days. Read the full report here.
