Rahul Gandhi lists army, judiciary among institutions ‘controlled by the 10%': Hindustan Times
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has listed corporates, the bureaucracy and even the armed forces as placed where upper castes “have total control” and Dalits, backward classes and minorities, who he said form 90% of India's population, are not adequately represented. Hindustan Times reports that he was speaking in Bihar's Kutumba on November 4, the last day of campaigning for the first phase of voting in the assembly election set for November 6. 5 killed as passenger train collides with goods train in Bilaspur: Indian Express

A passenger train has collided with a goods train near Bilaspur railway station in Chhattisgarh, Indian Express reports, leaving at least five people dead and several others injured, officials said on Tuesday evening. The accident happened when a MEMU train coach hit a goods train near Bilaspur station at about 16:00 hours. The report says that railways said it has “moved all the resources and all measures are being ensured for the treatment of the injured”. Sharing details about how the accident unfolded, Bilaspur Collector Sanjay Agrawal said that the last bogie of the goods train dashed into the passenger train’s first bogie. Seven climbers dead after Nepal avalanche, BBC reports
At least seven climbers, including five foreigners and two Nepalis, have died after being hit by an avalanche on a Himalayan peak in north-eastern Nepal, expedition agency Seven Summit Treks said. BBC reports that the incident happened at 09:00 local time on Monday near the base camp of the Yalung Ri mountain in Dolakha district. Rescuers located two bodies, and are still searching for the remaining five, who are believed to have been buried by snow. Eight others have been rescued and are in the capital Kathmandu getting treatment for their injuries, the report adds. Read the full report here.
US courts halt deportation of Indian-origin man wrongfully jailed for 43 years, India Today
Two US courts have directed the immigration department to halt the deportation of an Indian-origin man, Subramanyam Vedam, who spent over four decades in prison on a murder charge that was recently overturned, India Today reports. The 64-year-old, fondly called 'Subu' by his family, has been kept at a detention centre in Louisiana that is equipped with an airstrip for deportations. Last week, an immigration judge paused his deportation until the Bureau of Immigration Appeals decides whether to review his case -- a process that could take months, the report adds. Voters in New York City are taking to the polls to pick their new mayor in a race standing out for its three-way dynamic with progressive, establishment and conservative candidates vying for control of the largest city in the United States, Al Jazeera reports. Opinion polls showed Democrat Zohran Mamdani holding a clear lead over independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. The report adds that Mamdani, who calls himself a democratic socialist, has drawn liberal voters with plans for free childcare, free bus transport and a rent freeze affecting roughly one million rent-regulated New Yorkers.
