Hindustan Times: CJI Gavai cautions judges against accepting govt posts, contesting polls

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan R Gavai has sounded a strong note of caution against judges accepting government posts or contesting elections immediately after retirement. Hindustan Times reports that he has warned that such practices raise “significant ethical concerns” and risk eroding public confidence in the judiciary’s independence. India Today on Trump doubling metal tariffs to 50 pc but skipping UK

 

US President Donald Trump has announced an increase in tariffs on imported steel and aluminium, raising them from 25 to 50 percent. This change, effective from June 4, is primarily aimed at protecting US steelmakers and the domestic manufacturing sector, India Today reports. The decision imposes potential challenges for trade partners, but excludes the United Kingdom from the tariff hike due to an existing trade agreement. South Korea's new president Lee Jae-myung pledges to 'unite' country, BBC reports

Just hours after winning the South Korean presidency, Lee Jae-myung has pledged to "unite the people" in his inauguration speech on Wednesday, BBC reports. The 61-year-old won a snap election by 49.4% - a clear rejection of his rival, Kim Moon-soo, who came from the same party as impeached president Yoon Suk Yeol. Minority commission chief slams Nitesh Rane’s comment on Eid: Indian Express

Pyare Khan, chairman of the Maharashtra State Minority Commission, has criticised the recent statements made by Minister Nitesh Rane, Indian Express reports, accusing him of sowing divisions and targeting Indian Muslims in the name of Pakistan. Rane had questioned the sacrifice of animals during Eid Al Adha, called for a celebration of a ‘virtual Eid’ and said India does not operate under Shariah law. Japan’s fertility rate hits record low despite government push, The Straits Times

 

The Straits Times reports that Japan’s fertility rate declined in 2024 for a ninth consecutive year, reaching another historical low as the government attempts to reverse the trend in one of the world’s most aged societies. The total fertility rate – the average number of children a woman is likely to have over her childbearing years – fell to 1.15, down from 1.2 the previous year, and marking the lowest rate in records going back to 1947, according to a Health Ministry release on June 4.
