High Court blasts Kamal Haasan for Kannada remark, India Today reports
The Karnataka High Court heavily criticised actor Kamal Haasan while hearing a petition filed by him seeking directions to ensure the release and screening of his upcoming film Thug Life in the state, India Today reports. Justice M Nagaprasanna questioned Haasan’s refusal to apologise for the statement, observing that it had hurt public sentiment. “No citizen has the right to hurt sentiments,” the judge said, adding, “Water, land and language — Jala, Nila, Bashe — are important to citizens. The division of this country was on linguistic lines.” The judge criticised the actor’s stance and remark questioning his responsibility as a public figure, the report says. Floods in Assam, Sikkim and Manipur have severely affected lakhs of people across multiple districts, Livemint reports, with houses being ravaged. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after speaking with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang and Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla, assured full support and assistance. South Korea votes for new president after martial law turmoil: The Straits Times
South Koreans flocked to the polls on June 3 to elect a new president, six months to the day that former leader Yoon Suk Yeol plunged the country into political chaos with his disastrous declaration of martial law. The Straits Times reports that after months of turmoil and a revolving door of lame-duck acting leaders, many South Koreans are eager for the country to move forward. Gujarat govt plans Operation Sindoor memorial park near Pakistan border in Kutch, Indian Express
Indian Express reports that the Gujarat government is working on a memorial park dedicated to Operation Sindoor — India’s military response to terror emanating from Pakistan — as a mark of respect for the defence forces as well as the unity the nation displayed, officials told The Indian Express. The memorial, which will be called ‘Sindoor Van’ (forest), will come up in Kutch district on the India-Pakistan border, which bore the brunt of the attacks in Gujarat from the other side, the report says. Al Jazeera live report: Israel kills 27 Palestinians at aid site in southern Gaza
At least 27 Palestinians have been killed and dozens injured in an Israeli attack on people waiting for aid in southern Gaza’s Rafah governorate at an aid distribution site run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which is backed by Israel and the US, Al Jazeera reports according to the enclave’s Health Ministry. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an independent investigation into the mass shooting of Gaza’s aid seekers that have been reported every day since May 27, when the GHF started its operations. The report also adds that Gaza’s Health Ministry says Israel “is deliberately undermining and stifling the health system through evacuations of areas housing hospitals and healthcare centres”.
