The Hindu on Supreme Court introducing reservation for staff

In a first, the Supreme Court has introduced a formal reservation policy for the direct appointment and promotion of its staffers belonging to scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. The Hindu reports that the decision was communicated in a circular issued on June 24 to all Supreme Court employees. As per the circular and the model roster now in effect, top court employees will receive a 15 percent quota and ST employees a 7.5 percent quota in promotions. Read the full report here.

 

35 dead in Telangana pharma plant blast, India Today reports

 

The death toll in Monday’s explosion at a pharmaceutical plant in Telangana’s Sangareddy district has risen to 35, India Today reports, as rescue workers continue to clear the debris from the devastated site. District Superintendent of Police Paritosh Pankaj confirmed on Tuesday the number of people killed in the explosion at Sigachi Industries pharma plant in Pashamylaram. The explosion, suspected to have been triggered by a chemical reaction inside a reactor, occurred between 8:15 am and 9:35 am on Monday, the report adds. Read the full report here.

 

Thai court suspends PM from duty, pending case seeking her dismissal, The Straits Times

Thailand’s Constitutional Court on Tuesday suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra from duty pending a case seeking her dismissal, adding to mounting pressure on a government under fire on multiple fronts. As per a report by the Straits Times, Paetongtarn said she accepts the court’s decision. “I want to apologise to people who are upset by all of this,” she told reporters, “I will continue to work for the country as a Thai citizen.” The court in a statement said it had accepted a petition from 36 senators that accuses Ms Paetongtarn of dishonesty and breaching ethnical standards in violation of the Constitution. Hours after AI171 crash, Delhi-Vienna Air India flight got ‘stall’, ‘don’t sink’ warnings: Hindustan Times

Just 38 hours after the fatal AI 171 crash in Ahmedabad that claimed over 260 lives on June 12, Hindustan Times reports, another Air India flight—AI 187 bound for Vienna—faced a serious in-flight warning. The Boeing 777 reportedly triggered a Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) alert, specifically a “don’t sink” warning, after the aircraft reportedly lost around 900 feet of altitude during its climb from Delhi. The pilots, however, managed to stabilise the aircraft and continued the flight safely to Vienna, the report adds. Read the full report here.

 

Two dead in Italy as heatwave scorches much of Europe

 

BBC reports that two people have died in Italy as temperatures continue to soar amid an intense heatwave across Europe. Elsewhere on the continent, tens of thousands of people have been evacuated because of wildfires in western Turkiye, while the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris has been closed because of the heatwave. The report adds that parts of Spain and Portugal recorded their highest ever June temperatures, with 46C registered at El Granado in south-west Spain, a day after records were broken in Mora in central Portugal.
