Former CBI director Nageswara Rao’s tweet ‘rejoicing’ Swami Agnivesh’s death confirms how a certain social rot has set in our society and is spawning. Alleging that Agnivesh caused “enormous damage to Hinduism, the former interim CBI head called him “Anti Hindu”.

He went on to spew venom against the departed sould saying, “I am ashamed that you were born as a Telugu Brahmin. My grievance against Yamraj is why did he wait this long!”

Many eminent personalities condemned Rao’s tweet saying it was wrong to “abuse the dead”. Historian Irfan Habib said, “You are a disgrace. Can imagine what all you must have done as a police officer? Abusing the dead may be Hindutva but is certainly not Hinduism. Better late than never. Get yourself treated.”

Delhi-based think-tank the Indian Police Foundation (IPF) criticised the former IPS officer in strong words in a tweet. IPF said he “desecrated” the uniform and “embarrassed” the central government. IPF tweet stated: “Tweeting such hate messages by a retired officer posing as an IPS officer – he has desecrated the police uniform which he wore and embarrassed the government. He demoralises the entire police force in the country, especially the young officers.”

Writer and social activist Harsh Mander said, “Very sad to read this tweet by a serving police officer, flaunting such uncivility and communal bias …just after his passing.” Deploring Rao’s tweet, Congress national spokesman Pawan Khera said Swami Agnivesh “stood like a rock to stop RSS from appropriating and swallowing the Arya Samaj.”

“As a Hindu, I admire the space my Dharma gave even to the adherents of Charvaka. Hinduism is too vast, deep and secure to even reject such stupid hatred that is seen in your tweet officer.”

Even after his tweet came under such a strong criticism and got deleted by Twitter too, Rao defended his hateful comments by doubling down on the venomous casteism and racism by claiming 'Hindus celebrate death of 'savages and pests' as festivals' in his later tweets.

Swami Agnivesh promoted the cause of bonded labourers. He breathed his last on Friday following multi-organ failure. He was admitted to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in Delhi. He was being treated for “liver damage”, said the IE report.

The veteran Arya Samaj leader always wore saffron clothes. In line with Arya Samaj tenets, he rejected idol worship. However, his life-long mission of working for bonded labourers that he would remain in public memory.
